Help Us Discover the Natural Insecticides of the Future!

The MicroBioPest research team of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) is searching for nature-based solutions from Crete for the protection of crops and public health.

Through the study of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, we aim to reduce the use of chemical, synthetic insecticides and to develop biological formulations that will not burden the environment, plants, or humans.

Why do we need dead insects?

In nature, many insects die due to infections caused by bacteria or fungi. By studying dead insects collected from crops, greenhouses, and agricultural areas, we can identify new microorganisms that may form the basis of future biological formulations for crop protection.

What do we do in the laboratory?

The samples received in the laboratory are used for the isolation and study of microorganisms that may be associated with the death of insects. These microorganisms are then evaluated for their activity against harmful insects, with the aim of identifying the most effective candidates for future applications.

What have we done so far?

Our team has carried out sampling campaigns in many areas of Crete and has created a large collection of microorganisms from soil, plants, water, and dead insects. To date, we have isolated hundreds of bacteria and fungi, several of which have shown strong insecticidal activity against insects. Some of these are being further studied as potential candidates for the biological control of insects, with the goal of discovering new natural compounds and microorganisms that can be safely used in agriculture.

What are bioinsecticides?

Bioinsecticides are natural products based on microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, or on substances produced by them, which can be used to control harmful insects.

Why is their development important?

The excessive use of chemical synthetic insecticides can negatively affect the environment and non-target organisms, while also contributing to the development of resistance in insects. Bioinsecticides offer a more targeted and environmentally friendly approach.

What types of insects are we interested in?

We are interested in dead insects found in:

• open-field crops,
• greenhouses,
• agricultural product storage facilities,
• natural or agricultural environments.

It is not necessary for you to know the insect species. You simply collect the insect, and identification is carried out by our research team.

How to handle the samples

• Place the insects in a clean, sealed container or bag.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight and high temperatures.
• If possible, keep the samples in a cool environment until shipment.
